The works of the French dancer and choreographer Jérôme Bel are meant to be provocative. He consistently undermines traditional concepts of dance and rather than focussing on beauty, perfection or virtuosity, he concentrates on the pure presence of the dancers on stage. How does theatre work? This question is also at the core of his collaboration with the mentally handicapped actors of Theater Hora. «Disabled Theater» recounts the first meeting between Jérôme Bel and this Zurich-based company. It is a kind of docu-theatre, which illustrates the exceptional abilities of the performers ‒ and the possible discomfort among the audience. (kdi)
